Please do not reject this question as non of the existing discussion clearly answer where MTPOS_MARA it is being used. Question is not about MTPOS-MVKE and question is not about how it is being populated and SAP has corrected code so that in inbound delivery MTPOS-MVKE is being used in place of MTPOS_MARA. If you still think this has been answered please direct me to the answer that will be of great help.

I would like to find out what if GenItemCatGroup MTPOS_MARA ( Basic Data 1) is blank but MTPOS-MVKE is populated with correct value. What are the processes which may affected if MTPOS_MARA is blank.I dont know any process in SAP where system refer to MTPOS_MARA. I know how item Category Group ( MTPOS-MVKE) is used by SAP.
As per SAP Note 205215 ( Item categry determntn for inbound deliveries wrong)
As of Release 4.5A, an item category group can also be stored in the material master in the general view. It is provided for the cases
for which no sales view should be maintained for the material or for which the sales view of the material cannot be read through the application because the sales area is not known.
